Have you ever wondered what you could do with that doodle on the napkin or notepad? A doodle can be a way to awaken your sense of creativity and self-discovery. This type of drawing is born of intuition and is a great tool for connecting with your inner voice. I believe a doodle can spark a series of artworks when you are stumped for ideas. This type of “play” is important to everyone who wants to grow creatively. I use doodles as the basis of a lot of my own artwork and it has helped me to expand my artistic voice.

In this workshop, students will be using doodle drawings as a basis for embroidery. We will take doodle drawings that been inspired by “prompts” to see how you interpret ideas into drawings and expand them into an abstract work of art. No drawing experience is needed, just a sense of fun.

This 168-page book, soft-cover and spiral bound, black and white text with many diagrams, further explores some of the design techniques first introduced in The Woven Pixel, which I co-authored in 2006 with Bhakti Ziek. The Liftplan Connection (or TLC for short) is not a replacement for The Woven Pixel, but is a standalone book. TLC includes more specific material on Photoshop Elements, as many dobby weavers choose Elements, not Photoshop, as their primary graphics program. TLC also includes material related to the use of network drafting with Photoshop. It includes chapters on creating threadings for graphics-based liftplans, building a weave library, designing liftplans with two or more weave structures, divided weaves, indexing colors and applying weaves, producing a loom-ready file in a format your weaving software and loom driver can understand, masking, overlays, using text in dobby designs, and other techniques usable on multi-shaft looms.

TLC will be most useful for weavers with looms of 16 or more shafts, but those with eight shafts will also find useful information here. It has relevance for weavers with mechanical or computer-assisted dobby devices, and for table looms with manual shaft lifting mechanisms (levers). TLC explains how to design in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, with layers, filters, and layer styles, in conjunction with your favorite weaving program, and has specific instructions for graphic import into the six most popular weaving programs.

Hello fellow SDA member,

My name is Astrid Bennett- I paint and print fabrics and make large painterly art quilts. I am also the new SDA Board level “Director of Representatives.” That’s way too formal a term for me, —I call myself the Rep of Reps. In any case, I am writing to you because we are looking for volunteers or “ambassadors” in your state. An Ambassador is someone who could be contact person for local groups and events in an area where there is a concentration of members. This is someone who could help a State Rep “on the ground” with events or exhibits without the communication responsibilities of being a Rep. I’ve included some basic information on this job below. Also, if you are a computer junkie and wish to help with creating or updating a state-level or regional blog or Facebook page, let your Rep know. This is an exciting time for SDA. We’ve added new Board members who are very committed to thinking forward and embracing the digital age. Our Vice President of Outreach, Jane Dunnewold, is very focused on membership issues, working on several projects such as a mentoring program (hmm, sounds great to me…)

We are in the process of re-evaluating the state representative system in order to make it helpful to members, and your input can be part of this process.

One of the perks of being an Ambassodor is the networking and friendship that comes from working with fellow members. It’s also a way to give back to the fiber arts community and to help insure its future and connection to younger members. Newer members, please note that being new is not a handicap in considering this. Just like in the schools, it’s often the kindergarten parents who are effective volunteers.

Ambassadors Job Description — Here’s the skinny:

Facilitates or is a contact person for a local fiber art-SDA group

Helps with local event or exhibit

Supports the state SDA rep. Networks with other Ambassadors if desired.

Is enthusiastic about SDA as well as a good “on the ground” communicator

Works with state rep to funnel news and events to her. She will be the organizational contact person and will create regular email communication with state members.

Enjoys the friendship and networking a group of like-minded fiber artist provides and the knowledge that she is contributing to field of fiber art as well as its future.

Ideas? Much is possible.

We are a small group and I have been giving out membership information every time I am am doing a show/lecture or demo.
